BBG & Wiz break down all the news and shows for this week in wrestling.

Back in 2002 Vince McMahon and the WWE split the company into two brands. The wrestlers were either drafted onto Raw or Smackdown along with certain championships only being defended on either brand. For me this was a great time in wrestling. Wrestlers only competed on one show so you knew each brand would feature something different. Talent that would normally never get a chance found a new opportunity by being built up on each show. Guys like Batista, Randy Orton, and John Cena were all people built up during this time period. Select PPVs like SummerSlam, Survivor Series, Royal Rumble and Wrestlemania where the only shows where you would get a chance to see both talents and on those nights it felt like a huge deal. The WWE Draft also felt like a big deal. The wrestling world was shocked when Triple H got drafted to Smackdown even if he got traded back to Raw the next day. On that same night you saw Stone Cold Steve Austin lead Team Raw against Team Smackdown in an epic brawl with fans actually picking a side. One year later the fans would be shocked again as John Cena got drafted to Raw.

Today wrestlers can show up on any show they please without any consequences. Championships like the divas championship and tag titles are combined but even with the larger roster to defend them against, still mean nothing. The WWE draft also means nothing for the very reasons listed above. Why should I care who gets drafted to Raw when chances are I will see them anyway? Why should I care if a champion switches brands when they mean so little to begin with? Do you think if Stone Cold were to lead Raw against Smackdown that anyone would care?

Now let’s switch our attention on the NFL. Dolphin’s fans around the world have come up with the slogan “Suck For Luck” because Andrew Luck is being praised as perhaps the greatest college prospect in the last fifteen years. But the Dolphins aren’t the only ones looking for Luck. There is a chance that the Colts might also get Luck thanks to an injured Peyton Manning. This has lead to the discussion of possibly trading Peyton Manning if they were to get the #1 Selection. If I were to tell you the Colts were going to trade Manning a year ago you would of laughed in my face and never let me write another column in my life. But this is why the NFL is great and this is why I love the NFL draft so much. Anything can happen and the futures of football players and NFL teams are decided on that night. Some will rise to greatness while others will be busts.

I’m talking to you about the NFL because I believe that the WWE can fix their draft by doing similar things. Not only can they make the Draft special but they can make the superstars who are a part of it special as well. Over the next few weeks I am going to break down the process of how I would fix the WWE draft. For now we will start with the initial announcement and beginnings of this transformation.

We will start with Wrestlemania 28, or more importantly the night after. It’s Monday Night Raw and Vince McMahon has been rumored to make an appearance. WWE.com has claimed that he will change the WWE forever. There have also been rumors that NXT might be brought back on TV but under a new name. Most internet fans will probably moan at this and not want to give it a chance. Personally I don’t blame them but that’s ok. Because it’s not about short term success of the show it’s about long term.

The show starts with Vince McMahon opening up Monday Night Raw. He says that last night John Cena defeated The Rock at Wrestlemania 28. He points out that Cena did what The Rock did at Wrestlemania 18 to Hulk Hogan. Vince says it got him to thinking and made him wonder who is going to beat John Cena. Vince McMahon claims that for the last 8 years he has turned John Cena into the face of this company and that he created a monster. Vince says that he looks at the current roster and see’s no one that has stepped up their game the same way Cena showed his ruthless aggression when he first debuted. Vince McMahon says his own World Heavyweight Champion Daniel Bryan didn’t even make his name inside WWE but instead some Indy promotion that no one has ever heard of. McMahon says that ends today and starting in two weeks the future of WWE would be created and every Wednesday night you would see those superstars on WWE: Evolution. McMahon also announces that tonight the brands would be split once more and in two weeks the superstars of Raw and Smackdown would get drafted. The superstars that get drafted will remain on Raw and Smackdown officially and would no longer get to jump from show to show. Vince McMahon said this would be the final WWE draft.

When Evolution officially aired the first few weeks and maybe even the first month would be used to get people familiar with the wrestlers. The fans would get to know their back story along with their personalities. They would also have to be real instead of scripted. You have to make people care about the men and women on this show and no one is going to care if they aren’t believable. There would also be no stupid contests like on NXT, just wrestling. The announcers would make sure everyone is clear with the rules of the show. Much like the NFL the superstars on this show would have to remain there for a certain amount of time but unlike the NFL they would only have to stay there for two years instead of three with a max of four years before either entering the draft or being released from the company.

The superstars on Evolution can also only compete on this show. No Raw, no Smackdown and certainly no PPV’s except one match at Wrestlemania which only the best wrestlers will get. Being on a PPV is an honor now and not a privilege. The superstars will also have their own titles to compete over: The Evolution World Title, The Tag Team Titles and the Women’s Title. The show would also have its own roster with anywhere’s from 40-50 superstars and divas and because each superstar needs to spend two years in the promotion before leaving, this will give us two years to build up these characters and storylines of their own. But how do you make a bunch of new guys feel as big as they do in College Football? I will answer that question and provide more details next week as we continue the WWE Draft Series.
